Experts in theology, religion and human rights gathered to discuss the use of torture in the U.S. and abroad and to prepare participants for anti-torture advocacy within their own communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/divinity.duke.edu\/moral-consensus-against-torture']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/divinity.duke.edu\/moral-consensus-against-torture\">Toward a Moral Consensus Against Torture: A Gathering of Students, Clergy, People of Conscience, and People of Faith<\/a>,\u201d was held at Duke Divinity School and First Presbyterian Church in Durham, N.C. \u00a0It was sponsored by the <a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/humanrights.fhi.duke.edu\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/humanrights.fhi.duke.edu\/\">Duke Human Rights Center<\/a>, the <a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/www.nccouncilofchurches.org\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nccouncilofchurches.org\/\">North Carolina Council of Churches<\/a>, and the <a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/www.nrcat.org\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcat.org\/\">National Religious Campaign Against Torture<\/a> (NRCAT).<\/p>\n<p>This conference was part of a national effort toward a moral consensus: torture is always wrong, torture does not make \u2018us\u2019 safer, and we need concrete tactics to refuse the climate of fear and compliance. Torture dehumanizes both victim and perpetrator; and it ultimately renders the nation that practices it morally damaged, less secure, and less human than before.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers and panelists representing diverse faith traditions included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abdullah Antepli, Duke University Muslim chaplain and adjunct faculty member of Islamic Studies<\/li>\n<li>Richard Cizik, president of the <a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/www.newevangelicalpartnership.org\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.newevangelicalpartnership.org\/\">New Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good<\/a><\/li>\n<li>David Gushee, Mercer University professor and chair of the Board of the New Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good<\/li>\n<li>Linda Gustitus, president of NRCAT<\/li>\n<li>Scott Horton, contributing editor of <a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/www.harpers.org\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.harpers.org\/\">Harper\u2019s Magazine<\/a>\u00a0(Copy of his remarks:\u00a0<a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/www.nationinstitute.org\/featuredwork\/fellows\/2102\/america_and_the_arab_revolution_of_2011\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nationinstitute.org\/featuredwork\/fellows\/2102\/america_and_the_arab_revolution_of_2011\/\">&#8216;America and the Arab Revolutions of 2011&#8217;<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>George Hunsinger, founder of NRCAT<\/li>\n<li>Robin Kirk, executive director of the <a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/humanrights.fhi.duke.edu\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/humanrights.fhi.duke.edu\/\">Duke Human Rights Center<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ingrid Mattson, director of the <a onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '\/out\/macdonald.hartsem.edu\/']);\"  href=\"http:\/\/macdonald.hartsem.edu\/\">Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations <\/a>at Hartford Seminary<\/li>\n<li>Gen. (ret.)
