My father is a very recently retired United Methodist minister, and he\u00a0sent this to my brother and me Christmas morning. \u00a0It reads as poetry,\u00a0and also like the terse outlines from which he gave his hundreds of\u00a0weekly sermons. \u00a0I asked him if I could share them with\u00a0profligategrace readers, this Second Day of Christmas. – ALH<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A few thoughts over breakfast.<\/p>\n

1 Kings 17. The Ravens, God told Elijah, would feed him bread and\u00a0meat. Elijah went on this assurance. As simple as that for him.\u00a0Believing that a bird could be told what to do.<\/p>\n

Righteous Raven.<\/p>\n

Landing on his shoulder and waiting for Elijah to take it from his beak.<\/p>\n

Coincidence: In “It’s a Wonderful Life,” a raven inhabits the Building\u00a0and Loan. George, a good man, at war with the evil, greedy banker.\u00a0Raven flapping, flying, perching, cawing.<\/p>\n

Why a Raven? Old Elijah’s story travels. No sentimentalized version of\u00a0this miracle\/legend. Just trust, hope, stay the course, obey, take\u00a0sustenance as it comes.<\/p>\n

Give us this day our daily bread. However it comes and by whomever.\u00a0Whirling, moving creation, like tiny ants we inhabit this little\u00a0sphere.<\/p>\n

Provided for. Some can only wait for the promised ravens. Some of us\u00a0are piggish and store away the bread and meat, stolen from those who\u00a0can only hope and pray.<\/p>\n

And yet we say, Come, Lord! \u00a0Whenever. Meanwhile: Ravens with full\u00a0beaks, for every thing which takes breath, carbon based vulnerable\u00a0ones. And bread and meat for soul as well. Can’t survive without both.<\/p>\n
